Why It Matters
Betts has won the Roberto Clemente Award ahead of his team playing in game three of the World Series at home. The Roberto Clemente Award is the MLB’s humanitarian award off the field. Betts is being recognized for his body of work with his 5050 foundation. Betts is the first Dodgers player to win the award since Justin Turner in 2022 and Dodgers ace pitcher Clayton Kershaw won the award in 2012 as well. The 5050 foundation which is a charity that Betts and his wife founded in 2021 is to help youth in the communities of Los Angeles and Betts’ hometown of Nashville develop resources for success. This year it did a lot of work on wildfire relief efforts in Los Angeles an gave money to fighting homelessness in Los Angeles.
