Why It Matters
Bylsma was fired with no replacement being named yet. Balsam was in his first season as Head Coach of the Kraken replacing Dave Hakstol. Bylsma was fired after one season in which the Kraken missed the playoffs for the third time in their four year existence. Bylsma had won a Stanley Cup as the Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009 and had last been a Head Coach in the NHL in 2016-17 with the Buffalo Sabres. Bylsma had made it to the Calder Cup Finals as the Head Coach of the Kraken’s AHL affiliate the Coachella Valley Firebirds before being promoted to the Kraken.
