Why It Matters

Ovechkin scored his 895th career NHL goal to break the record. Ovechkin scored on the power play in the second period of his 1,487th career NHL game which happens to be the same amount of games that it took Gretzky to break Gordie Howe’s record with his 802nd career NHL goal. With Gretzky and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman at the game it was paused to celebrate the moment. Ovechkin was joined on the ice for the ceremony by his mom wife and two sons.
